Zeus Statue!!


This week in year five we learnt about one of the ancient wonders of the world, the temple of Zeus. We looked at a video about the temple and we wrote bullet point facts up into our morning books. Then we wrote it up into our foundation book in paragraphs and this is what we wrote.

In Ancient Greece everyone would take pride in the Olympics in the stadium. They built it for the Olympics and the statue of Zeus. A stone would be held every year, and on the statue he is holding a septa. There is a man called Phidius and he is the person that built the statue. Inside it was made of wood and on the outside it was made of gold, lots of jewels, ivory which was made of elephants trunks. I found this very cruel.

Ancient Greek Sandals for a Greek god


In year 5,we have been making Greek sandals for Greek gods in art.We first drew two designs in our art books of our chosen Greek god. Secondly we wrote a description of what god it is,why we chose it,what designs we put on it and what colours it will be. After we finished all of that and coloured it,we chose our best Greek sandal and did an proto type on it,using scrap paper,scissors and glue.We done all sorts of designs that was suitable for the god we chose. Year 5 are now waiting to do our actual sandals on the 4th December on Ancient Greek day!

Bullying Poems




In year 5 this week we have been doing anti bullying poems. Here are the poems:


Never worry to share a fear,
Help and advice is always near.
It’s not your fault you feel alone,
Everyone has the right to feel safe at home.
We must all make sure the bullies Fail when they fight,Trust and respect is all our right!



Ignore the failings of the bullies,
They have their own dark worries.
Give respect and value others,
Keep everyone safe, we’re all brothers.
Stand tall and don’t be afraid,Bullying is so un-cool at Glade!

Foolish bully it’s so silly
Haven’t you got a mind of your own?
Don’t listen to bullies,
don’t give them a care.
Bullies are cowards,
so don’t be scared.

Trouble or worries can come at anytime
Tell your teacher and you’ll be fine!

The more you wait,
The more you will take.
Don’t waste any time, use your courage,
Because it’s your time to rise and shine!

Rememberance day!

This week in year 5, we have been learning why we wear poppies in November.We didn't realise that there was such a big, important story behind the poppies.We had a lesson with Mrs.Ward, about it.
We were taught about the trenches, the bombs, the Flanders field poem, and the soldiers that died.
Trenches are like a tunnel going downwards. People lived in trenches so that they couldn't get shot or bombed! These trenches were 7 feet deep, and 3 feet wide. Dirty, muddy water came knee-high. Men had to shave in the trenches! Imagine that! Shrapnel's (sharp metal pieces) were more likely to hit the people in the trenches than bombs.

World War I was meant to be the war to end all wars, but sadly it wasn't. During WWI, Belgium was the most bombed. The Flanders fields was in Belgium. In Flanders fields where everything was destroyed, people were lying dead on the roads, but then these red poppies started to grow! It was truly AMAZING! Poppies are a sign of hope. Ever since then, every year, on the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month,we have 2 minutes silence to remember those who died in the wars, and those who are still fighting today.

In year 5 we have been learning about papermache and we have been doing it with Mrs.Hartwell.So we got some balloon's and blowed them up and then we papermache it so
we can make our GREEK vases.
How to make papermache.
First we get Newspapers and rip it up into little peaces, and once you've done that you get plane paper, then get any other papers. To make it stick you get glue and water and mix it together in a big bowl.And get our ripped newspaper. and then put it into the mixture of the water and glue.

take it out and stick it on your balloon. And then keep on doing that until you cant see

anymore of your colour balloon.and when it's dry and hard you can pop the little

peace that is sticking out and then take the balloon out of the papermache.

3D Shapes

This week we have been making 3D shapes.

First we made a cube and than we wrote the instructions to it in our literacy book for Miss Hartwell and Mr Miller can make a cube. We also drew little diagrams to make it easier in our instructions. Then we made other 3D shapes and they are called pyramids, dodecahedron, octahedron and pentagonal pyramid. We also wrote on each side how many edges, corners there were. For an example if i was doing a pentagonal pyramid it has six edges, six corners and six faces. We wrote all that information onto a pentagonal pyramid or whatever shape we are doing. For the cube we just done folding, for the other 3D shapes we used glue and a lot of folding. On each side of our cubes there were two different colours.

Exploding Science!
In 5M we have been doing a an experiment about how the different liquids affect the evaporation rate. Our question was how does the type of liquid affect the time it takes to evaporate.

EQUIPMENT
  • Lemonade

  • Water

  • Gel

  • Milk

  • Candles (x4)

  • Candle Holders(x4)

  • Lighter
    Heat Proof Mat

  • Measuring Jug

  • Foil Trays

METHOD

  1. First, you get four different type of liquid. Lemonade, water, gel, and milk.
  2. Then, you get 4 candles and 4 candle holders, and 1 heatproof mat, 4 measuring jugs.
  3. After, you get a lighter or matches, you pour the liquids inside the measuring jugs. And get foil trays, you pour the liquids inside the foil trays and place on the candle holder.
  4. Afterwards put the candle under the candle holders.
  5. Start the stop watch as soon as you place the candle under.
  6. Finally observe in case of one of them evaporate.

RESULTS

We found out, that the type of liquid does affect the evaporation rate.

' The Selfish Giant '


This week in year 5 we have done a lot of things, as it was the first week back from half-term. But one thing we enjoyed as a school was the puppet show on Wednesday. It was called the ' The Selfish Giant '. The puppeteer called Rob and the author was called Oscar Wild.

One day three children called Rosy, Daisy and Billy played in a park that was owned by the giant. They were playing really happily and then got tired so they fell asleep. Next, the giant came from a very long time of sleeping to his garden. As soon as the giant came, Daisy woke up. Then she woke up Billy and tried to wake up Rosy but she couldn't. She only woke up when the giant spoke to her. Then he said to her " You are not aloud to play in my garden anymore!" Afterwards she went away, the giant built a fence and held a sign saying " Trespassers will be prosecuted!" The giant fell a sleep and because he was being so selfish the season changed to spring to winter. There were also four more characters called Lady Snow, Jack Frost, Northail, Northwind. Because it turned spring again they decided to go. The giant let any person to play in his garden. There was a little boy was crying because he couldn't climb a tree like the other children. Then the giant put the little boy on the tree and then he kissed his nose. Then the other children came and they played in the giant garden every day. But the giant never saw the little boy again. He turned very old and finally he saw the little boy again. He was so happy and then the little boy and him were very close.
